- Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units in an assigned area.
- Performs field tests (chemical, physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or alter unit processes.
- Monitors and observes operating conditions, and records observations and data in area shift log; diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action; and communicates status, changes, and abnormalities in operating areas.
- Follows process control procedures for assigned areas; verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and variances to supervisor.
- Prepares chemical solutions, and monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.
- Samples water, wastewater, sludge, and gases according to schedule, and services automatic samplers.
- Performs routine lab tests and routine instrument calibration for portable meters.
- Performs minor maintenance including routine preventive maintenance, lubrication, and minor adjustments; and performs basic troubleshooting of equipment, recommends solutions and, where appropriate, fills out work orders.
- Operates vehicles for plant operational purposes.
- Provides on-the-job training for Operator in Training and Operator I in operational, maintenance, and safety duties as required.
- Assures work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating, and emergency response procedures.
- Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for work area, tools, equipment, facilities, and grounds.
- Performs the duties of Operator Supervisor and related duties as needed.
- Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperatures and climatic conditions, and must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.
- High School Diploma/GED is required.
- Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs for process controls.
- Requires working knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and practices of water/wastewater treatment, as acquired through three years of experience.
- Requires ability to diagnose plant-wide process problems and take remedial action, and to troubleshoot equipment.
- Requires good reading, math, writing, and verbal communication skills; a scientific and mechanical aptitude; and the ability to read, interpret, and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles, and other equipment.
- Requires ability to plan, organize, train, and functionally supervise subordinates.
- Requires the ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees.
- Must have a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
- Must possess a MA Grade 6C Wastewater Operators license.
- Ability to perform tasks standing (25%) and walking (75%) for as many as five miles per shift.
- Work positions including climbing stairs (60%), squatting, and working with hands extended above head 18 inches (25%) and 30 inches in front of body (10%).
- Must be able to lift and carry 60 pounds while walking distances of 10 feet.
